That's So Gay! Vince Vaughan misses the point...

Not a good week for the gays, with Tea Party Lunatic and Republican NY Governor candidate Carl Paladiono embracing Orthodox Jews with homophobic remarks, and President Obama's administration sticking it to the gays again by saying the Department of Justice will appeal a judge's order to stop enforcing Don't Ask Don't Tell.

Plus I came across this nugget of bliss on The Huffington Post, which was first brought to light by my stalker Anderson Cooper. A trailer for the movie The Dilemma features Vaughan saying "Ladies and Gentlemen, electric cars are gay" as an insult to the idea of electric cars.

So is it funny, or outdated and bigoted? Would he substitute a term referring to Moslem's or Jews or Blacks?

Under the media spotlight, the movie studio has cut the line from the trailer.

However Vaughan wants to keep it in the film, saying in a statement:
"Comedy and joking about our differences breaks tension and brings us together. Drawing dividing lines over what we can and cannot joke about does exactly that; it divides us. More importantly, where does it stop."

His argument makes sense in theory, so is this a joke about our differences? Nope. I think it's just a cheap line that uses "gay" as a generic insult word, as he would use "lame" or "stupid".

Vaughan is showing himself to be either not so caring or not so bright. Or both. Besides, everyone knows electric cars aren't gay. The Acura ZDX and every type of Volvo are gay...

Argghh... I wonder how he would respond to jokes such as "That comment is so white or hetero".

I love me a daily dose of Alfred... nice finishing touch. I don't know where to draw the line. But anybody who's read me or talked to me knows that! And no. Vince is not a brightly light deck.

Okay, number 1 -- Vaughn is a douche.

But as a Volvo owner for 25 years, currently driving a super hot silver S80 Turbo, I may have to bitch slap you.

@ Virginia --- good comparison, he would never say "that's so white".

@ Nikki --- thanks, and I agree, it seems that Mr Vaughan is a few clowns shy of a circus.

@ Jayne --- that car sounds totally hot, and stylish and cool, so why not call it gay? Nothing wrong with having a gay car!!!

So being gay, I should drive an electric car. No wonder I feel wrong driving a Ford! I think I might start using racial slurs now. Just as a joke of course.

I wont lie.. I always found Vince funny.. but never did I think "Wow that guy is smar!" .. this just shows me how right I am!

When people use the word "gay" as an insult it just shows me how ignorant they are!

Great point. I too tackled this debate a while back. Being a gay man, I think it's derogatory to say 'that's so gay' in the context of referring to something that is bad or not the norm. By saying 'that's so gay', to describe something you don't like is like saying there is something wrong with being gay.

Personally, I long for the day when I see a straight couple out shopping. And I imagine the girl trying to get her guy to buy a certain type of shirt and he rejects it saying, "That's so gay, I'm not wearing that!"

To which I'd immediately step in and say, "No, actually that is NOT gay, because a gay man would never be caught dead wearing a paisley print on a corduroy shirt (in July)."

Blimey, your post made me a bit sad. I thought that Obama was a bit more advanced than that, and when I found out he was oppposed to the Don't Ask, Don't Tell, I was quite shocked.

I bet he his more vocal on other equal opportunites issues...and they might include race?

A friend of mine saw Wall Street 2 last night and says this preview with the 'that's so gay' line was still in it...

I have nothing against the third sex. They are human and deserve to be respected.

Vaughan may not be caring, or bright, but he is funny, and oddly attractive. However, I DO think that's a cheap, lame, and highly insulting joke.

Maybe Louis CK could use "that's so gay" in a way that would work. Maybe it's the kind of term that only gay people can use, the way Black men use the N word. But its use in a mainstream film just seems small-minded. Unless he was using it while trading insults with a gay person who could respond in kind. The thing is how do you respond in kind to a white, hetero male?

Brahm (alfred lives here) said...

@ Ginny - good point, we cannot exactly say "that is so white hetero male" as people would not take it as an insult, though they may assume that we are referring to the colour beige!

@ Meleah - agree with you on bad joke, not sure that I agree he is attractive, that being said to each his own. I find Rahm Emmanuel oddly attractive. Yep, weird, I know...
