Maybe Louis CK could use "that's so gay" in a way that would work. Maybe it's the kind of term that only gay people can use, the way Black men use the N word. But its use in a mainstream film just seems small-minded. Unless he was using it while trading insults with a gay person who could respond in kind. The thing is how do you respond in kind to a white, hetero male?

Great point. I too tackled this debate a while back. Being a gay man, I think it's derogatory to say 'that's so gay' in the context of referring to something that is bad or not the norm. By saying 'that's so gay', to describe something you don't like is like saying there is something wrong with being gay.

Personally, I long for the day when I see a straight couple out shopping. And I imagine the girl trying to get her guy to buy a certain type of shirt and he rejects it saying, "That's so gay, I'm not wearing that!"

To which I'd immediately step in and say, "No, actually that is NOT gay, because a gay man would never be caught dead wearing a paisley print on a corduroy shirt (in July)."
