The View's Sherri Shepherd blames the gays...

I have today off work, so I spent the morning trying to make the world a better place. And by "make the world a better place" I mean napping with the dogs, reading, and watching TV.

I tuned into The View for the first time in ages, saw a bit with Barbara Walters skyping in post heart surgery (yikes, did I know she was off for months? Out of the loop, people).

The was opening chat was about World Cup Soccer (yawn) and Mel Gibson (asshole).

Somewhere during the 'is Mel Gibson a racist or just an asshole' conversation, Sherri Shepherd went off on people who use racist language, trying to pull it off with some lame anti-Canadian metaphor. Dumbass.

So as I haven't watched the show in ages, and the segment with actress Angie Harmon was simply boring, I googled The View to see what I had missed over the last few months and came across this whole brouhaha on the internet; on June 22, during a discussion of HIV rates among straight African American women, Shepherd blamed this on gay and bisexual men, an old myth that has long since been proven wrong by the Centre Disease Control. Apparently Shepherd and The View are refusing to correct her dumbass and homophobic 'blame the gays' remark.

This is disappointing, as The View, especially Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar, are usually such friends of the gay community. True, Elisabeth Hasselback is a right wing cold-hearted 12th-century freak, though as of now has moved up (down?) to my second least favourite after stupid Shepherd.

GLAAD and the Black Aids Institute want The View to correct and apologize, and took out an ad in Variety today (see above). See more @ http://www.glaad.org/.

Blimey. It sounds like we have been catapulted back to the 80's when all that terrible scaremongering was rife. Surely on moral, factual and political grounds they must be forced to retract this statement?

Sherri Shepherd is a stupid uneducated woman. I am not saying that as an off the cuff smart ass comment but listening to her talk she really proves that she is uneducated!

I always thought Sherri Shepherd was a moron; this just proves my suspicions. How do people like her get on TV shows like this?

it's been a while since i've watched THE VIEW, and obviously, seems like i haven't missed a whole lot...
good for me, bad for the collective consciousness, as she's been given a public tribune...
one must make his/her own judgment in these matters and not rely on some "celeb" opinion, but given the average intelligence of viewers...

In all my years working with AIDS patients in health care, there was only one African American male. He happened to be heterosexual and contracted it through a blood transfusion. Sherri should hold the hands of those dying from this horrible disease and tell them its okay to go. She should sit and wipe the tears of those abandoned by family members for having "a gay disease" ( not my words ) THEN she may have a different VIEW on the subject.Sherri needs to stand up more often. Its obvious her brains are in her ass and she is suffocating them by sitting on them. The ignorant should be pitied, but in this case, I would be all for a public stoning.

This has become reason #37 why I don't watch The View. I'm technically their target audience, and yet I'm oddly put off by pretty much everything they say. Yck.

MMH, I just about died laughing at your 'brains in the ass' comment. LOL

The View is one of the most annoying shows on TV and if it wasn't for Whoopie and Joy Behar it would be unwatchable! They need to correct their mistake!

@ midwestern mama holly:
for having seen many die alone of aids, i think this disease breaks all barriers and cast a stigma that petrifies people, still...

maybe YOU should talk to her. don't they take phone calls anymore? i'm sure you'd have a more polite way to go about it than me...

I really can't stand "The View". It's passed off as intelligent and it's beyond stupid. Turn on something else. Bravo is always good with the stupid housewives or cooking shows which are always fun.

I too love MMH's "brains in the ass" comment above! Sherri has never been a bright bulb, I just kind of thought of her as that slow-witted cousin you ignore who turns up for dinner and you have to seat them at the table. But then she says bigoted crap like this and I just want to scream.

And as much as I usually love Whoopi, her defending Mel Gibson today was just unacceptable. You're sure he's not a racist? Sorry, you're wrong. He is racist and anti-semite and misogynist and homophobe. And an asshole too...

I thought the same thing as Lady M "Did it just suddenly get all 1983 in here?"
I remember discussing that rediculous "Monkey" theory with my (kinda dim) grandma. She asked "Does that mean they had doings with monkeys?" I said "No, they were just sharing their heroine."

I actually watched that episode and spent a lot of time shouting at the TV. When that did nothing, I wrote about it on my blog and haven't watched The View of my own free will since. I actually think one of the pannel members that day was gay. I was a bit disappointed in him. I would have torn her a new one. For some reason it's always the conservative ones that are loudest on that show.

Hey Lauren, I wanted to shout at the computer when I watched the clip on youtube! An gonna go find your blog post right now!

Today they are talking about "don't ask don't tell" and Sherri has stepped in it again. Clay Aiken is on and he is trying to educate her. Sheesh... I don't get the ignorance, especially coming from someone who should know first hand about discrimination.

Isn't Shepherd the moron who thought the world was flat, too?
