The Village People & "The Y"?

Fresh to you from stupidville, the YMCA has announced they are updating their image and rebranding.

Why? According to http://www.foxnews.com/ --- and I have no idea how the hell I wound up on that fair and balanced website --- this comes after two years of research and is intended to better clarify what their mission is: strengthen communities by focusing on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Their new name? "The Y". Oh yeah, that brings total clarity. Two years to come up with a generic name like that? Morons.

And in case you are worried that this name change will impact how we dance at 70s parties and wave our arms around in the shape of the letters Y-M-C-A, the Village People's original lead singer Victor Willis has issued a statement saying that the group will not make any changes to its song "YMCA". Yes, really.

In the world of the Village People, the YMCA, or The Y, is the gayest place on earth...

They have everything for you men to enjoy.
You can hang out with all the boys...
You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time.

Gay, gay, gay, at The Y, Y, Y.

I rememeber it quite well. I love using my arms to spell it out. I also remember how much fun it was to go there. After a while I went to the baths and forgot all about "The Y"

Didn't every call it "the Y" anyway? Why change your name officially and lose all that history? Doesn't make sense to me!

I feel more socially responsible just having read this post. Thank you. Y. Snicker.

As consolation, we could now sing, "T ... H ... E...Y." Not as catchy, and the "E" might be a little harder than the other letters, but at least there'd be the added confusion of whether we're just singing the word, "They."

(I think more confusion is probably appropriate here.)

How could they!? I'm just... beside myself! I missed the 70s so I'm going to look up the lyrics. All I know is the arm waving part. If what you quoted comes from the lyrics, I'm glad I'm not a boy at the YMCA... sounds like it could have been a scary experience.

Damn, you're prolific this week, boyfriend.

As for "the Y", let's just hope the YWCA shows better sense.

Wow...I could have helped them with that about 30 years ago because growing up we ALWAYS called it The Y. Those a-holes owe me a Million dollars!

Yeah, I kind of think everyone calls it The Y, don't they? How is that new? And what kind of consulants spent time and money to come up with that?

And yes Jayne I am spewing a lot of opinions this week, arent I? Not sure why...

Thanks all for stopping by and commenting!

Jimmy Fallon had a bit about this tonight on his show, where he did a bit about sending the Y a thank you note for changing their name, and he looks forward to the new song "The Y" by the Village Person.

Ok it was funnier when he did it....
