Holy Crap, It's Canada Day...

July 1st... rent is due, three days until July 4th, and it's Canada Day! We have been around since 1867, so are pretty damn old. Here's a few fun facts you may or may not have known...

1- Canada Day used to be called Dominion Day. Yawn...

2- Winnipeg is the coldest city in Canada. And it is really effing cold. Been there, done that...

3- Basketball was invented by a Canadian.

4- Celine Dion is the bestselling Canadian music act, having sold over 200 million albums. I preferred 80s Canadian pop singer Luba, what the hell happened to her?

5- Canada does not have Target stores.

6- Canada is home to the world's largest pysanky (Ukrainian Easter egg). Drove past it last weekend.

7- In terms of size, Canada is the second largest country in the world, and with a relatively small population has one of the lowest population densities.

8- The Blackberry is Canadian. iPhone not. I have both (gadgets, gadgets, gadgets).

9- One word: poutine. Food or not food?

10- When I googled "famous gay Canadians" I got a list of Rufus Wainright, Brian Orser, a former porn star, and a bunch of people I have never heard of...

11- Canada has two national sports: hockey, and, yes, lacrosse.

12- Canada covers six time zones, and I am apparently in none of them, as the TV listings in Alberta are all fucked up and everything shows an hour late. Or two hours early on time shifting.

13- We have two national symbols, the beaver and the maple leaf. There has gotta be a porn title in there somewhere, no?

14- Canadians invented the world's first anti-gravity suit. And no I do not know why that is relevant to anything...

15- Cherry Blossom candy is available only in Canada.

That's all for now folks... Happy Canada Day!

well, on this side of the country, we're more like 400 years old...
i liked LUBA also, not more than CELINE, but, you know... don't know what she's up to now either.
TARGET stores may be coming to canada. was in the news yesterday, coincidentally!!
sure would love to see that pysanky. strange we don't have something similar here, considering the large ukrainian community we have here...
poutine? it's divine food, if you know where to eat it!!! don't knock it 'till you've had it.
lacrosse? i would have expected football or curling. football for me, thank you!!
the beaver does the MAPLE LEAF team!!!
and last, cherry blossom candies are now smaller and just don't taste the same as in my youth...
sniff!!!

happy canada day guys!!

I didn't know Luba was a Canuck! Now I'll have "Let It Go" in my head. I've had worse.

It's a PYSANKA! Sheesh ... now that you are married to a man of Ukrainian descent, you will need to learn these things. When is the BlackBerry Storm replacement being launched? I want one. And, to add one to the list, Edmonton is the most northern provincial capital city. Happy 143rd Canada Day! Where's the free breakfast being served?

Brahm (alfred lives here) said...

Hmm, free breakfast, where is that? Sounds good!

And according ti Wikipedia's WikiProject Ukraine (who knew?), the gargantuan easter egg has likely been around since times of ancient Egypt, and can be written as pysanka, pisanki, pysanky, etc, and is a fairly generic terms - there are more specific kinds such as kraszanki. Once again, who knew?

I did not know ... thanks! When was the BlackBerry Storm replacement being launched? Happy 143rd Canada Day!

I disagree with #2. I think Yellowknife is the coldest city. And as for Luba, I think her career went kaput when she came out.

Happy Canada Day from the Arctic.

Brahm (alfred lives here) said...

Holy crap, Luba came out? She's gay? I had no idea. My gaydar misses the mark again.

And you may be right about Yellowknife; while some websites say Wpg is coldest, and others say Yellowknife. The numbers may davour Yellowknife.

I have been to Winnipeg many times, and is veddy veddy cold... hard to imagine colder!

Happy belated Canada Day! I've never been to Canada, but I have had poutine, and I loved it.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I would love it if you stole some of my 'getting to know me' things, that's the point - get to know each other. :) Have a good day!
