Ricky Martin comes out...

From the quelle shockeur files, Ricky Martin officially came out of the closet today. Sure, we've all know for a decade, and sure, he is past his super duper mega star sex symbol peak, but I think it's still a brave thing to do.

The 38-year-old Martin posted a heartfelt and personal message on his website that includes a statement I love, "I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am."

You can see the whole thing at http://www.RickyMartinMusic.com/

I first saw this headline on people.com (hey, it's my day off, I can waste my time), and the first reader comment was "So sad... he will stand before God and be judged for the sinful life he has chosen. Those poor kids". Nice tolerant compassion, people...

Overall most of the comments are positive and not very surprised. I mean, really, surprised? Still, hate is hate and how do people write crap like that?

People write crap like that because they fear what they do not know. I actually feel sorry for people who say so horrible things to another human being. Too bad in their next life they will probably come back as a cockroach......or the next Tiger Wood, whichever is worse : )

Well no shocker there with hunky Ricky but those hurtful, unnecessary, judgement comments still shock me.

All I can say is "It figures"...I just watched this video yesterday.."The Bible Told Me So".. with my daughter about the church and its horrible, destructive stand on homosexuality...
and the power it has had over the years regarding lifestyles...I thought Id heard it all, till I saw this....fear and self hate drives these views...Ricky looks awesome there...Thanks for posting this..!..Have a Great Day Brahm...

Gay or not the guy has great abs and that all that matters.

I'm not in the celebrities should come out camp, and really I hope one day it wont be an issue, I do say good on him for not giving into the pressure in his hey day to make the announcement (not that it really would be an announcement). He has waited until he is in the right place for him and, that should be his choice, not mine or the medias.

As to the hate-mongers. I wish they would realise their decision to view the world with hate and judgement is the true "choice".

Love your closing line, RH. Can't believe I hadn't seen it like that before.

i would normally yawn, as this is no news to me... but for the hate-mongers, if karma serves them right, they will come back as what they despise most: themselves!!!!
what bugs me about those people though is that they usually spill their venom "anonimously", not having the guts to sign up their ofeensive behavior.

Good for him! Anyone that comes out helps the cause.

I agree, everyone coming out makes gay people more visible to people who might not otherwise think about this equality movement -- or other equality movements -- at all.

And yep I also agree with the abs comment...

And LOVE the comment by RH that it is the haters who are making the choice by choosing to live their lives with judgement and hatred.

Ricky Martin is not past his super duper mega star sex symbol peak; his picture still hangs on my fridge (on the side of the fridge so the front can feature my super duper mega star sex symbol husband-to-be). Hugs, honey.

Thing is being gay shouldn't be a cause it should just be. I hope that makes sense. As another commenter said someday it won't matter.

people are scared of people who are different from them cause they just don't have the capacity or compassion to understand them. The safety is in conformity...which is actually total bullshit.

I am glad that Ricky Martin was not scared any more and accepted and declared who he is. Very brave of him I must say.

gay or not i still love me some ricky martin. all he has to do is just wear tight pants and shake his butt! but srlsy, i serioulsy admire any gay person who comes out; mostly because you have a choice. see, being black i had no choice. so if i had a choice, i cant say that i'd be as brave as all of those who have come out. i'm already out (as a black person: aint no hiding it).
