Hello blankety blank... it's Name Your Car Day!

Big big holiday tomorrow, people -- it's Name Your Car Day!

No, I don't know why, or who the hell started it. I know it's true because I saw it on http://www.holidayinsights.com/, and if it's on the interwebz you know it has to be true!

I have had my current name-deprived car three years, and I love it. A black Acura RDX. And it is almost paid for now, so soon I will love it even more.

Until now I had not realized how deprived the car is because it does not have a name. Boats have names. Fancy houses have names. Even criminals have names. Mel Gibson has a name. So clearly I have been a delinquent car owner. Gotta fix that.

And while my car is name-deprived, the GPS system does have a name. Two summers ago, K and I were driving to Vancouver and during that 13-hour drive you tend to get a tad silly, and we decided as the GPS came on in her loud demanding overly polite voice that she should have a proper name. So we did the research, considered the options, took a straw poll, and went through the process. Nah, we didn't do any of that crap. We were listening to Olivia Newton-John's greatest hits at the time, so we named the GPS Olivia and that has stuck ever since. And yes, Olivia Newton John's Greatest Hits. Don't judge.

As I am a guy, and this is a big black car, I want it to have a guy name.

I have a challenge with names. I stutter, so I want to avoid words and letters I will always trip over. Which is why Alfred works so well for the pooch. So Derrick is out. As is Thomas. And Joseph. And Bruce. Hell, Bruce was out anyway, even I think that one is waaaay too gay.

So what have I thought of? Juan because it's sexy. Stewart for Jon Stewart. Oscar because I like it (and Oscar was second name choice for Alfie). Clinton for Hillary Clinton. Ryan for Ryan Reynolds. Murphy for Murphy Brown (stutter may be an issue there). Elvis. Or Stephen for Stephen King...

Okay, I can't decide. Which of these works? Other ideas...? Name my car, people!

I'm kinda leaning toward Oscar.

Geoffrey. Definitely. NOT Jeffrey...Geoffrey.

Everytime I see the name Geoffrey, I pronounce it Jee-Off-Rey. Weird?

I named my car the first day I had it. It was my very first car, and her name is Lula. She felt very Hawaiian to me.

I always name my cars. my current car? Lola. she's sassy just like her name.

I like Oscar. masculine, but still quirky. that car looks like an Oscar.

I vote for Oscar too.

Lula is good, that is quirky and feminine. Not a fan of Geoffrey.

Oscar seems like the front runner here.

I like the sentiment of Curtis, not sure it suits the car.

Maybe Edgar? Not sure why. Does that mean it becomes Eddie?

Oscar, Oscar, Oscar. That was the name of our dearly departed basset hound. Our other bassets are Shakespeare and Willa (after William S. and Willa Cather). We name all our dogs after queer or questioning writers.

I kind of like Oscar, but staring at that picture made me randomly think of Ben. So... my choices are Oscar and Ben. If you happen to have a bandsaw, I named the one at work Penny. The dishwasher was named Dexter.

I like the idea of a dishwasher named Dexter, Although that name is now pretty much associated with a serial killer now. And wasn't Dexter a character on Dynasty as well?

Ben is wise, I like that, but I think the stutter would be an issue there.

Oscar seems like the front runner still...

Stewart! (Take me, Jon, take me!!) But wouldn't it also be a stuttering hazard?

BTW, thanks for popping over my blog and commenting! We need more men over there! ;)

I like Ozwald. You could shorten it to Oz. Or Ozzy if you wish. Our dogs have multiple names. Harry is "Harry" as well as "Agent Orange" and "Peace Corps". Honey is "Honey" as well as "Hun nay nay" and "Marine Corps". Our BMW wagon is the "K-9 Cruiser", our BMW coupe is "the Kraut" and the M roadster is "the Mexican". They are all black and beautiful.

Ozwald. I love Ozwald, had not thought of that one. A definite contender!

I do like the Kraut, that is fun in a totally wrong yet totally right sort of way.

Ozwald....

This is a toughie... I feel like crap, first of all, because my black acura SUV has no name either. Hmmm. Classy and black... Denzel? Gosh, I see why you are having trouble.

Brahm (alfred lives here) said...

Ooh, I like Denzel, very clever, and I think would be an issue with the stutter. Will frustrate myself with the d-d-d.

Still leaning towards Ozwald...

My vote is for Clinton. I always knew Hillary would be a better president for the USA than Obama.
