I love pop culture. Love love love. And while my expectations in this Lohan-esque world tend to be pretty damn low, sometimes I do still naively hope for more and better. Sometimes I get more and better. And sometimes stuff just blows.
And then there are those TV shows, movies, and books, which are pretty good, or even really good, and yet still not up to expectations. Whether it's the all-star cast, or huge acclaim, or buzz, they have potential and they fall short.
Here's stuff I expected more from:
InceptionYes we finally saw the year's most buzzed about flick. And yes it had terrific visuals and many amazing moments. But beyond that, what the hell was so special? I don't care if the spinning totem fell or not, and what was so earth-shattering?
Mike and MollyFrom the guys behind
Two and a Half Men and my beloved
Big Bang Theory, this was supposed to be a smart and sweet comedy, and rise above the expected fat jokes. And after watching it twice, all I have seen is that talented actress from
Gilmore Girls and some annoying stand-up guy being subjected to endless fat jokes. Not cool.
The Finkler QuestionThe well regarded bestseller, winner of the prestigious Man Booker Prize in 2010, went nowhere. To me it was endless wordy tales of whiny widowers talking about anti-semitism, wandering around England. I rarely walk away from a book before I finish it, and I did from this one.
ConanYep, he got screwed by NBC, and no I don't feel sorry for him as he got like $40 million and whole new levels of fame. And now the new show seems skittish and antic. When you are up against Jon Stewart, you need to do better than this. Sorry Coco...

I haven't seen Inception, not a Leo fan, might catch it on Demand.
I haven't watched Mike and Molly for the reasons you mention. As a larger woman [getting smaller :) ] I don't need to hear fat jokes.
I don't know the book, but I do like Conan when i get to see it. Maybe that is why I don't mind it..
I hated "Inception". For an action flick, it was frigging boring to me.
Conan makes me tired. Screw me over (or just screw me) and give me $40 mill and I'll keep my mouth shut.
I decided to wait until other people saw Mike & Molly before committing to watch it myself. It seemed like it had so much potential, and yet, kind of got in it's own way. Everyone keeps saying that it's full of the obvious fat jokes with very little else...I think I'll pass.
All great reasons why we should be up and out being active instead of sitting down being inactive.
As a heavy woman I happen to love Mike and Molly. I end up with a smile on my face at the end of the episode and that is more than I can say about a lot of shows...like Glee...which makes my eyes roll until my head hurts.
Denyce
@Denyce - glad you like Mike and Molly, I like the actors, the show doesn't work for me. Sometimes they get better with time.
@ Vodka - we saw Inception on demand, I agree is worth a shot that way.
@ Scarlett - well put, I agree, when you get huge dollars like that, stop your whining already.
Inception made my head hurt. I don't want to have to work that hard when I watch a movie. Conan was best those last two weeks he was NBC. Not much special about him now. Letterman is still king of late night for me. Not that I stay up that late and watch, mind you.
chelsea handler gets me at 11pm, then i turn to coco at 11:30, letterman at 12 and jimmy fallon at 12:30. whatever anyone does, just stay away from jay. i'm pretty sure he's a sarah palin fan.
Aw crap. I feel like a right heathen. I haven't watched any of those films. Mind you, my nearest cinema is miles away, and my TV doesn't work.... am I excused?!
No TV?????? Oy....
Uh oh. This middle-aged fat lady really enjoys Mike and Molly.
Also, I will miss Medium...
Mike and Molly can suck it, but I loved Inception. And DiCaprio is fast becoming one of my favorite actors. I used to think he was meh but he blew me away in "Revolutionary Road" and everything since. And then I went back and watched "Catch Me If You Can" and he retroactively blew me away.
@ token -- glad you like Mike and Molly, I havent found its charm yet. All hail The Big Bang Theory!
@ Beckeye -- while I am not so excited about Inception, I thought Revolutionary Road was brilliant and he was brilliant in it. And yes Catch Me If You Can blew me away as well!
I like the Big Bang Theory, too!
I'm very eclectic that way!
I'm so glad I'm not the only person that didn't think inception was all that everyone said it would be...
I had debated staying at home to read a book or going to the movies... I kind of wished I had waited for it to come out on dvd instead of leaving my book behind after seeing it lol
